Cancer of the stomach  (gastric cancer) still affects about many people in the USA and  in the UK each year but the incidence is dropping. A number of different types of cancers affect the stomach. The most common type is adenocarcinoma because it starts in the glands of the lining of the stomach. Other cancers include squamous cell, lymphoma and sarcomas. 

It usually presents with indigestion, heartburn, vomiting blood, evidence of bleeding into bowel including dark, sticky stools (melena) or the symptoms of anaemia such as lethary, dizziness and shortness of breath on exertion

Causes of gastric cancer. Mostly we do not know why cancers start but there are increased risks amoung smokers and those eating a lot of smoked food.

The treatment of cancer of the stomach is primarily surgery (gastrectomy)  Other treatments include radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
