Cancer of the uterus affects about 40,000 women in the USA and 9,000 women in the UK each year. The cancers usually starts in  the lining of the uterus (womb) from the glandular components hence is called an adenocarcinoma. Rarely it can start in the other tissues of the womb producing sarcomas. Benign tumours of the uterus are called fibroids otherwise called lieomyomas - these rarely progress into malignant tumours.

The most common symptom of uterine cancer is post menopausal bleeding or discharge.

Causes of uterine cancer. Mostly we do not know why cancers start but there are increased risks if taking tamoxifen for long periods of time or various other lifestyle factors particularly being overweight.

The treatment of cancer of the uterus is primarily surgery (hysterectomy). Other treatments include radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
