A
consultant, cancer specialist leading cancer treatment services at the
Primrose Oncology & Research Unit, Bedford since 1996. Professor
Robert Thomas also leads the prostate
brachytherapy program and supervises Radiotherapy at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge University
NHS Trust and is a visiting professor at Cranfield
University. Main tumour site interests include Breast,
Urology and Colorectal cancer. (Publication
list)
Qualifying in 1984 at 22 years, after training as a general
physician, formal oncology training in mainstream cancer care took place at the Royal Marsden, Royal Free,
Mount Vernon and
Middlesex Hospitals London.
Other roles include being deputy editor of the British Journal of Cancer
Management and editor of the the medical journal "Focus on cancer
medicine" and editor of cancernet.co.uk. and
keep-healthy.com. Medical student
teacher at Cambridge University and lecturer at Cranfield University.
Research
training 1992-4: The

of
Neurology
,

Institute
of
Cancer
Research, Dukes University North Carolina, USA. This full
time research post investigated firstly the role of intralesional
radioimmunotherapy in patients with recurrent high grade glioma. Secondly, a
laboratory project evaluating the distribution and dosimetric attributes of
intralesional radiolabelled MAb in experimental animal tumours. Thirdly, a
computer and physics based project studying the impact of 3-D multimodal
image registration for stereotactic radiotherapy and surgery.
Current research interests
Academic
interests have now turned to methods which improve patient’s
understanding of their disease and treatment options. This research has
produced a number of practical information tools ranging from bespoke
patient booklets, leaflets and 6 video films. The methodology for this research is also now being taught to colleagues
and students internationally in formal teaching programs, medical
conferences and invited lectures. More recently research has focused on
how lifestyle can improve quality of life and disease outcome following a
diagnosis of cancer. As well as a number of practical lifestyle strategies
for patients, his team have designed and are conducting two of the UK
largest quality of life and lifestyle studies in patients with breast and
prostate cancer.
